Chapter 3 Metals And Non-Metals
Very Short Answer Type Questions
Q.1. What chemical process is used for obtaining metals from its oxide ?
Ans. Electrolytic refining process.

Q.2. State two ways to prevent the rusting of iron.
Ans. (i) By painting, (ii) By oiling,

Q.3. What is meant by ductility and malleability ?
Ans. Ductility: The ability of metals to be drawn into thin wires is called ductility.
Malleability: Some metals can be beaten into thin sheets this property is called malleability.

Q.4. Why is sodium kept immersed in kerosene oil ?
Ans. Sodium is very reactive. It strongly react with oxygen. If is kept exposed to air it catches fire. So it is kept immersed in kerosene oil.

Q.5. Name the two metals which are found in free state in nature.
Ans. Gold and Silver.

Q.11. Give reason why copper is used to make hot water tanks and not steel ( an alloy of iron ).
Ans. The copper is less reactive metal as compared to iron. It can not react with cold or hot water, so copper is used to make hot water tanks.

Q.6. Name the metals present in your kitchen.
Ans. Copper, Iron, Aluminium etc.

Q.3. Why is the patient of anaemia disease advised to eat iron containing vegetables such as spinach?
Ans. Because the disease of anaemia is caused due to the deficiency of homoglobin which contain iron. Spinach is rich in iron which is used to from haemoglobin therefore, those patients are advised to eat spinch

Short Answer Type Questions
Q.1. Which gas is produced when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to a reactive metal? Write the chemical reaction when iron reacts with dilute H2SO4.
Ans. when a reactive metal is added to dil. H2SOacid, then hydrogen gas is released.
Reaction of iron with dil.H2SO4
Fe  +  H2SO4   ➡   FeSO4  +  H2
(Iron) (Sulphuric (Iron(ii)     (Hydrogen gas )
             acid )          Sulphate)

Q.2. Define the following terms:
(i) Minerals, (ii) Ores, (iii) Gangue.
Ans. (i) Minerals: The elements or compounds which occur naturally in the earth's crust are known as minerals.
(ii) Ores: At some places minerals contain a very high percentage of a particular metal and the metal can be profitably extracted from it. These minerals are called ores.
(iii) Gangue: Ores mind from the earth are usually contaminated with large amount of impurities such as soil, sand etc,. called gangue.
